He completed his articles with Ilbery Barblett and O’Dea and was admitted to practice in February 1989.  Julian was admitted to Partnership in Ilbery Barblett and O’Dea in 1992 and remained a partner in such firm until December 2001, when he left to establish his own firm.

During his period with Ilberys he handled a wide variety of litigation, including commercial litigation, product liability, de facto property disputes, work accident claims, occupiers liability matters and motor vehicle accident claims.   During this time he appeared as Counsel at trial and on appeal in all of Western Australia’s superior Courts.

During this period he developed a particular interest and expertise in medical negligence litigation.

He has spoken at conferences for the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, the Royal Australian College of Anaesthetists, the Australasian & New Zealand Colposcopy Conference, various functions initiated by MDA National, Western Australia’s largest medical defence organisation, Princess Margaret Hospital’s paediatric staff, the Australasian College of Midwives, The Federal Government’s “Open Disclosure” Initiative and nursing conferences at Armadale Hospital, Osborne Park Hospital and at Broome Regional Hospital.

Julian has appeared in various media presentations, most notably appearing on 4 Corners’ expose on King Edward Memorial Hospital in 2000. At that time Julian was handling approximately 20 major cases arising from obstetric care at such hospital.

Julian has appeared on behalf of Plaintiffs in more than 50 trials in Western Australian Courts, including the District and Court of Appeal. He appeared as Counsel for Tammy Sheppard both at trial and appeal, in the so called “big baby” case.  He has acted for patients in a number of other high profile cases in recent years.
